Quetzalcoatl
Quetzalcoatl is a feathered serpent god in Mesoamerica. Carvings of him are also anthropomorphic, his human form wearing the mask of a bird and various feathers in his outfit.
In Aztec culture, Quetzalcoatl took many roles. Quetzalcoatl was the transgressor between the earth and sky. He was also the primary god of fertility and rain. Among agricultural people, this signified he was the god of life itself and thus a very important deity.

There are also a wide variety of stories representing the origin of Quetzalcoatl; of which many depict Quetzalcoatl being born to a virgin. His association with humanity varies widely as well, many tales regarding him as simply a deity that assisted humanity to create the powerful and prosperous city of Tollan.

According to some historians, however, he is depicted as a tall bearded white male and that when Hernan Cortes came to Mexico he was mistaken to be Quetzalcoatl by the Emperor Montezuma, which purportedly lead to the downfall of the Aztecs. Skepticism about this tale is widespread: many believe Spanish documents were biased in such a way that portrayed the Aztecs as gullible.
